Harmon Corridor - The New "Hip Strip" |
|||||||||
Las Vegas
was about to get a
second Strip.
The
following
article was
written in
2006 before
all the
project
cancellations. The Las Vegas Strip can't really expand further, linearly. McCarran Airport rides its east border (south of the Mandalay Bay) and the Stratosphere anchors the north end surrounded by established neighborhoods. The Strip's current 4 miles is too long now to be comfortably walkable. The solution to this is a new Strip which intersects the existing one. When complete, the Harmon Corridor will be 2.5 miles long. It will be anchored by the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino at one end and the Rio at the other. It will intersect the Strip at the Planet Hollywood and meander through MGM MIRAGE's CityCenter. There are many elements regarding the infrastructure of the Harmon Corridor project. Building a bridge across I-15, was completed in early 2005. Realigning Harmon closer to the Jockey Club (with a diagonal intersection at the Strip) is funded by MGM/Mirage and is under construction. Building a rail-road intersection at Valley View Road then extending Harmon north to Flamingo Road (near the Rio) is in the final planning stages. Meanwhile, various developers are snatching up land all along Harmon Ave. There are already 14 new major projects; six of them currently under construction and three open for business. |
